Be Clear on Cancer
Despite recent improvements, cancer survival rates in the UK still continue to lag behind our European neighbours. Research has shown that much of this deficit can be attributed to poor public awareness of cancer symptoms and late diagnosis. If we were to match the best survival rates in Europe then the lives of many individuals would saved. The Department of Health (England) has set a target to save 5000 more lives from cancer each year from 2014. Matching the best survival rates for ovarian cancer would have a significant impact, saving up to 500 lives every year, just through improved awareness and earlier diagnosis.
In order to achieve its target, the Department of Health has launched the Be Clear on Cancer campaign, an initiative which aims to improve the general public’s knowledge of key cancer symptoms. In July 2012 the Department of Health announced that ovarian cancer was to be included in the campaign. The first seven local pilots launch on January 14 2013, and will run through until the end of March. The success of the local pilots are critical if the ovarian cancer awareness campaign is to progress to a regional, and then national level.
Target Ovarian Cancer, Ovacome, Ovarian Cancer Action and The Eve Appeal have worked closely with the Department of Health to ensure the success of the campaign, sharing their knowledge and expertise at an expert advisory group meeting hosted by the Department of Health.
